Are Tattoos Art?

View original blog conversation at http://community.artistaday.com/kickapps/service/displayDiscussionThreads.kickAction?as=30492&w=112024&d=26876&ac=new

First art is partially defined as a skilled workmanship. So anyone who says tattoos are just a skill, ok! They are! Which in turn makes them an art!
Someone else said that it's not their art... their body is a gallery...
When I got my first tattoo I was so excited that I was getting a piece of art on my body! What a great expression of art!
This conversation peeks my interest because I am currently working with three BenRini artists that are tattoo artists as well as their art medium of paint or drawing. We are working to change the perspective of tattoos from a trade, to a fine art as many people already do.
If you think about art mediums what are some of the first that come to mind? Painting, Drawing, Sculpting...yes and then Photography, Multimedia, Mixed Media.... Of these mediums the later three have only been considered an art in over the last 100 years or less! What would you tell a photographer now? Your work is a trade... you cannot create ART from that! NO! You wouldn't say that now because we all know that you certainly can!
From that perspective, those who disagree that tattoos are a fine art should reconsider their opinion.
Thank you!

Even Newer Site

In April we posted a new website that was okay, but we quickly outgrew its capabilities. This July we posted our 3 site with a new dynamic company called Volusion. We searched relentless for a company that could offer everything we need to run our business without losing site of our mission, Promoting Artist.

Now we can offer each artist custom web pages, e-mail marketing campaigns, plus full shopping cart options.

Please check us out on our NEW site and leave us a comment.

New Site

BenRini has gone through some changes in recent months. We've signed on a new web developer, Johnny OSI, and have added several new artist.

Kacy is a recent graduate of the Herberger College of Fine Arts at ASU. He's an excellent photographer and loves black and white photography.

JohnnyOsi is an artisan of sound and vision. Over the years Osi has developed whatever talents necessary to express the expression-less. He has been called a poet, an MC, a musician, a producer, a graphic artist, a philosopher, and a mystic, but really, he's just restless.

BenRini has recently partnered up with Image School in Tempe to nurture the artist in their students. Classes are held every Saturday this month with a Gallery opening to the public on April 25th. All proceeds help support the schools art program. Come join us on the 25th and Support the Arts in Education. Click here for more information.

Self Portrait by Mike Benge - (1)

This project has been inspired by Chuck Close and is my lame attempt to copy his craft. What you see has taken 3 months and probably will not be finished for three more. Please post a comment on your thoughts and which version you like the most.
